Selenium & iodine deficiency in NZ soils - 12th Feb 2010

In New Zealand, soils are relatively low in both selenium and iodine. This means we do not get these nutrients through our diet. There is increasing evidence that combined selenium and iodine deficiencies also have significant physiological and metabolic consequences in human subjects (Thomson 2004).

The thyroid requires both iodine and selenium to function;

  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) affects 2.4% of the population (Michalopoulou et al 1998).
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) affects 1.3% of the population (Topliss, Eastman 2004).
Symptoms of an underactive thyroid may include intolerance to cold, slow metabolism, weight gain, constipation, fatigue, poor memory... the list goes on.

If you suspect you may have a thyroid condition, arrange an appointment to see Dee
